The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released its 50th annual Automotive Trends Report, highlighting significant advancements in vehicle fuel efficiency and reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for model year (MY) 2023. The report indicates that the average fuel economy for new vehicles has reached a record high of 27.1 miles per gallon (mpg), while real-world CO₂ emissions have declined to an unprecedented low of 319 grams per mile.

Key Findings:

  • Improved Fuel Economy: MY 2023 vehicles exhibit an average fuel economy of 27.1 mpg, marking a 1.1 mpg increase from the previous year. This enhancement reflects a 40 percent improvement, or an increase of 7.8 mpg, since MY 2004.
  • Reduced CO₂ Emissions: The average CO₂ emissions for new vehicles have decreased by 18 grams per mile from the prior year, achieving a record low of 319 grams per mile. This represents a 31 percent reduction, or 142 grams per mile, since MY 2004.
  • Impact of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs): The integration of EVs and PHEVs has contributed to an 11 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions for MY 2023, underscoring the role of these technologies in mitigating climate change.
  • Manufacturer Compliance: All 14 major automotive manufacturers have met the EPA’s light-duty GHG program requirements through the MY 2023 reporting period, indicating industry-wide adherence to environmental standards.

Expert Insights:

  • EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan emphasized that these findings affirm the effectiveness of robust, technology-neutral standards in driving environmental progress and delivering cost savings to consumers. He noted that ongoing innovation by manufacturers is directly enhancing air quality and public health.
  • Despite these advancements, the report noted that passenger cars and light trucks still accounted for nearly 17 percent of total U.S. GHG emissions in 2022, highlighting the necessity for continued efforts in emission reductions and fuel economy improvements.
  • Lynkwell CEO and Co-Founder Schuyler Poukish commented that the EPA’s report is a powerful validation of the progress and potential for EV adoption, saying, “The EPA’s 2024 Automotive Trends Report highlights the impressive strides the automotive industry has made in reducing emissions and advancing fuel economy and is ultimately a testament to what is attainable with public-private collaboration in development. This progress underscores the critical need to modernize utilities, and we take pride in leading efforts to enhance grid resilience, scalability, and security, ensuring energy infrastructure evolves alongside these advancements.”

The 50th anniversary of the EPA’s Automotive Trends Report underscores the substantial progress made during the past five decades. Since the agency began compiling data in 1975, vehicles have become approximately 99 percent cleaner by limiting the emission of common pollutants, significantly benefiting public health and reducing the prevalence of conditions such as asthma and heart problems.

In summary, the EPA’s latest report showcases the automotive industry’s strides in enhancing fuel efficiency and lowering emissions, while also highlighting the ongoing need for innovation and adherence to environmental standards to further reduce the sector’s impact on climate change.
